Two Gold, Two Silver Races for FW Worlds
Posted On:  11/07/2013 05:33:56

On the penultimate day, the breeze came in mid afternoon with a nice steady 15 knots for two exciting races of the final series for gold and silver groups.  Arnon Dagan (ISR-1) took the first win with Steve Allen (AUS-0) taking the second.  Casper Bouman (NED-52) is at the top of the leaderboard but only two points ahead of Gonzalo Costa Hoevel (ARG-3) who is two points in front of Steve Allen.

Qualifying Rounds Completed at FW Worlds

Another beautiful day dawned. The Race Committee decided to run Race 4 for the Blue Group in the morning southerly wind. Marks were set close to the shore and competitors launched in front of a good crowd of spectators in 12-13 knots. It was a clear start, a great race and Arnon Dagan from Israel was the winner followed by Nicolas Warembourg (FRA) with Gonzalo Costa (ARG) taking the third slot.

With this race finally out of the way and a complete set of four qualifying races each, the groups could now be sorted into gold and silver fleets, the top 64 going through to gold. While this was all happening the wind was shifting to the west, the race committee was re-setting the course, and the competitors waited ashore, eager for battle to commence.

The gold fleet took to the water in 12-15 knots but the wind was frustrating, not settling. Eventually the fleet was under starter's orders and away with a clear start . . . only to have to abandon as the wind was too patchy. Competitors were sent ashore as the race crew stayed on the water to monitor the course. One last attempt was made to start but the wind gods didn't want to play today.

Almost But Not Quite at FW Worlds

A beautiful sunny morning in Viganj for the briefing with the start scheduled for 12, but competitors had to wait until early afternoon before at last the wind kicked in. When it comes it builds quickly, 15 knots was recorded in the course area and blue group were away first.

Top Three in each of today's races:

Group Blue race 2:
1. Antoine Albeau (FRA),
2. Arnon Dagan (ISR),
3. Steve Allen (AUS)

Group Yellow race 3:
1. Casper Bouman (NED),
2. Ross Williams (GBR),
3. Janis Preiss (LAT)

Group Blue race 3:
1. Sebastian Koerdel (GER),
2. Antoine Albeau (FRA),
3. Gabriel Browne (BRA)

At the start of race 4 for the Yellow Group there was a general recall so black flag was introduced for the next start attempt.  The wind had decreased to 12 knots, dropping during the whole race.

Group Yellow race 4:
1. Miguel Martinho (POR),
2. Michael Polanowski (POL),
3. Maris Birzulis (LAT)

Meanwhile the Blue Group was heading to the course area, but sadly there was not enough wind to start race 4.  So, in all a successful day with 2 races each for group yellow and blue, but blue still has to do one more to finish the qualification series.
