short version of the highlight

Argentinian Francisco Saubidet Birkner had already secured the title of 2014 Techno 293 U17 Boys South American Champion", and qualified his country for the Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, with the perfect score of 10 before the 12th and final race.

Silver and Bronze positions on the podium were also determined.  Lars van Sommeren (NED-800) took the final championship bullet and was followed over the line by Geronimo Nores (USA-108), both of whom have already secured their countries' Youth Games places.

Maria Belen Basso (PER-50) finished the championship as she started, third over the line in the last race, and claims the title 2014 Techno 293 U17 Girls South American Champion.......( more )

The day promised the normal conditions of Potrerillos, but it delayed a little to grow with a top wind speed of 16 knots and by the third race it was back down to 6/7 knots.

11 championship races were completed and the second discard comes into play. In Francisco Saubidet Birkner's case, this means discarding one of his bullets as he maintains his top form winning style. Second placed Lars Van Sommeren is 20 points adrift but 8 points ahead of Geronimo Nores who occupies the third spot on the podium.  With just one championship race left there is nothing anyone can do to change this order, nor can there be any last-minute charge for the podium as 4th placed Daniel Pereira is 17 points behind. ......( more )

When the sky is blue the wind starts blowing over Lake Potrerillos.  The sailors have had 5 races over two light wind days and now 15-22 knots is expected for the remainder of the Championships - a perfect combination to suit everyone and everyone has a chance to win.

In the Techno Fleet, Francisco Saubidet Birkner, ARG-40, proved he is an expert in whatever conditions are thrown at him as he took all three bullets again today.  Lars van Sommeren NED-800 produced consistently better results than day 2 and has moved into second place on the podium, pushing American Geronimo Nores down to third.......( more )

RESULTS: Techno 293 after 8 / Raceboard after 9

There is no doubt that Francisco Saubidet ARG-40 has his sights firmly set on the Championship title.  After writing off the first race of the event with a too-enthusiastic over-the-line start, he has taken the bullet in every race, his DNF is now discarded and he has the perfect score of 4.  Francisco is a clear ten points ahead of his closest rival, Geronimo Nores USA-108, second at the recent North American Championships.  Not such a good day for last night's leader, Lars van Sommeren from the Netherlands who has slipped down to third, on 16 equal points with Facundo Ridriguez Beistegui ARG-102 who posted improving results today.

First girl Maria Belen Basso from Peru has slipped down to fifth overall and our first Brazilian, Daniel Pereira, is now sixth.

1st under-15 boy Argentinian Martin Nores has moved up the leaderboard past our 1st under-15 girl Brazilian Larissa Ricci Schenker.  ......( more )

Chilly Start for South Americans in Mendoza

An unusually chilly start under grey skies for the South American Championships for Techno 293 and Raceboard.  Equipment and measurement checks completed, competitors gathered for the briefing wearing jeans and warm hoodies!

Raul Pasqualin is on site to ensure the fairness of the competition.  "It is really nice to see how windsurfing has changed in the last maybe 8 years.  Techno Class has re-born windsurfing from the base which is most important for the kids - we have to focus on the kids - and here in South America it is happening like we planned.  It is great to be here with a Brazilian fleet the best ever in our history and delighted also to see competitors for the first time from Venezuela and Chile; plus everyone from Aruba, Peru, the USA, Chile and Uruguay . . . Of course the largest number here is from Argentina . . . It's really fantastic to be here!" ......( more )
