And the RS:One 2014 Trikora Beach World Champions are...The 2014 RS:One Trikora Beach World Championship was officially begun on Tuesday 15th December in Bintan island, Indonesia. For the first time, Indonesia, the 2018 Asian Games organisers, hosted an international RS:One event with the strongest fleet an RS:One World championships has seen so far.
For this last day of competition the weather and the waves decided to be cooperative with perfect sunny sky and a medium breeze of 14 knots.
The race committee scheduled 3 "Regatta" races back to back considering the threat of a dry reef with the afternoon low tide.
First surprise of the day was the victory of Indonesian sailor Suartana Komang ahead of Cheng Kwok Fai and Geylord Coveta. The second race passed without any radical surprises and the podium contenders controlling each other.
In the third race of the day, in an increasing breeze, Geylord Coveta thought he had done the job by finishing second but this was without knowing he had crossed early the starting line under the black flag.
In the women's fleet Ma Kwan Ching, from Hong Kong, allowed for the first time Syadine Arethusa, from Indonesia, to cross the finish line in first place and take the final podium position from her team mate Rio Horirah.
The Hong Kong Team demonstrated an impressive consistency and maturity in these championships claiming the Men and the Women World titles.

Dramatic mistake from Philippines and Oka Sulaksana shines for IndonesiaMorning rain and 2 meter deep waves greeted racers and officials. For safety reasons, organisers decided to postpone the start till a window of opportunity with light breeze and smaller waves in the afternoon.
The race committee scheduled 2 "Regatta" races back to back to maximise racing in the time available.
The first race of the afternoon saw a costly mistake from the 2012 World Champion Geylord Coveta failing to spot one mark and leaving the gate open to his direct rival Oka Sulaksana. He took advantage and claimed the victory in this race.
Oka was on fire and nailed another first place in the final race of the day despite conditions getting light and tricky. The consistency of Hong Kong sailor, Cheng Kwok Fai, ensured he remained on the top of the leader board going to the final day.
In the women's fleet, Ma Kwan Ching from Hong Kong was unstoppable in her quest for her second world title. Behind the leader, the Indonesian, Rio Hoiriah and the Japanese Hisui Takahashi, exchanged places on the podium.
The final Men podium position will be decided on the final day with a breezy and sunny morning forecast.

RS:One 2014 Trikora Beach World Championships - Breezy, Sunny and TrickyThe sailors were given the morning off after the demanding 4 races achieved the day before. Organisers set up a tour showing the beauty of Bintan island. With a promising forecast of good breeze and clear sky, all racers were ready early afternoon.
The race committee scheduled 2 "Regatta" races back to back to be followed by a "Super slalom".
The 2 regatta races were performed in a good breeze of 19 knots and witnessed a battle between Cheng Kwok Fai and Indonesia star Oka Sulaksana each claiming 1 bullet.
Oka, who is also in the master class, nailed a solid victory in the sunset "Super Slalom" knocking down the younger generation.
In the women's fleet, Ma Kwan Ching from Hong Kong continues her leading cruise ahead of the Japanese Hisui Takahashi and Indonesian Rio Hoiriah.
The 2013 RS:One World Champion, Cheng Kwok Fai, from Hong Kong is still leading the championships from the 2012 RS:One World Champion Geylord Coveta but Indonesia, with Oka Sulaksana, is mounting a serious challenge to the current leaders.
The 2 next days will certainly ensure a close battle continues for the Men's World title.

Hong Kong Team inspired by the return of the sunDespite an overcast and threatening sky, the race committee decided to not waste time by sending the fleet as early as possible in the morning with the clear goal of validating the maximum of races in this second day of competition.
A medium breeze up to 17 knots, as its best, gathered the 53 racers with the return of the sun in the Indonesian beautiful sky. Morning 2 races saw the Philippines, with Geylord Coveta, attacking with 2 clear victories while the current Hong Kong leader has responded with 2 bullets in the afternoon races.
In the women fleet, a clear 4 bullets for Ma Kwan Ching from Hong Kong ahead of the Japanese Hisui Takahashi and Indonesian Rio Hoiriah.
The 2013 RS:One World Champion, Cheng Kwok Fai, from Hong Kong has been affirming his lead on the 2012 RS:One World Champion Geylord Coveta but the Games are far from being over with 3 more race days and possibly a marathon race on Friday.

RS:One Trikora Beach World Championship Gets Under WayThe 2014 RS:One Trikora Beach World Championship has officially taken off yesterday with challenging weather conditions in Bintan island, Indonesia. For the first time, Indonesia, the 2018 Asian Games organisers, has held an international RS:One event with the strongest fleet an RS:One world championships have seen so far.
The winter monsoon has also decided to welcome the international racer with a massive electric system which showed up at the horizon soon after the first race started.
A medium breeze of 12 knots rapidly built up and obliged the race committee to send back to shore all racers after race 1 with gusts blowing up to 30 knots and apocalyptic scary sky.
In the second race of the day, the sailors braved the tropical rain and a light wind progressively dying at the end of the race.
Taking the lead, the 2013 RS:One World Champion, Cheng Kwok Fai, from Hong Kong pressurised the 2012 RS:One World Champion from Philippines, Geylord Coveta. Coming in first place for women was Ma Kwan Ching also from Hong Kong (2013 RS:One World Champion).
We are now looking forward for further racing with fierce battles and hopefully more sunny and stable conditions.
All RS:One World Championships sailors are reminded to please make sure you bring your own national sail stickers to the World Championships in Bintan. This means national letters with your own number eg: ABC-123, on a white background, for both sides of the sail. Letters should be min 45mm apart and min 230 mm height.
Also a reminder that the harness lines and uphaul and downhaul system are not included in the charter as per NOR.

Bintan and Indonesia to host 2014 RS:One World Championship
For the first time Indonesia will host an ISAF windsurfing class world championship when the RS:One World Championship hits the shores of Bintan on the Riau Islands of Indonesia.
Trikora Beach will be the host venue for the event which will be organised by the Indonesian Sailing Federation in co-operation with Trikora Beach Club and NeilPryde Ltd.
Trikora is the collective name of the north-eastern beaches on Bintan, Indonesia. Until around 2000, the only tourist activity along Bintan's east coast was at Trikora Beach, a popular hang-out for local visitors from Tanjung Pinang as well as foreign back-packers, and Trikora remains a popular day trip. Trikora is actually quite a long stretch of separate beaches, with beaches numbered from south to north as one to four (satu, dua, tiga, empat in Indonesian).
The World Championships in Indonesia will be the culmination of a busy year for the RS:One class in Asia. It began with the Singapore Open in January and the Asian Championships, Pattaya, Thailand in May. The worlds will be preceded by the Asian Games, Korea, in October and the Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand, in November.
