Winning a World Champion title in the Professional Windsurfing Association is no mean feat; winning two in the same year is truly exceptional. At just 20 years of age, Sarah-Quita Offringa from Aruba has achieved just that - she is the PWA Women's Slalom World Champion and the PWA Women's Freestyle World Champion.

Offringa has finished on the podium at every single PWA Tour event she has contested this year. At five of the seven regattas she stood on top of the podium and in the Freestyle competition proved unbeatable. Her dominance is outstanding and her ability to excel in two very different disciplines of windsurfing is impressive.

2011 was not the first time Offringa was crowned World Champion and she holds a PWA record for being the youngest competitor to win a world title in women's freestyle for four successive years, without losing a heat.

Sarah-Quita Offringa is an inspiration for young athletes and has been a driving force behind a new school of women's freestyle windsurfing. She has supreme athletic ability and talent and is a real ambassador for the sport of sailing.

My parents

What was the first boat you ever sailed and how old were you?

I started windsurfing when I was 9 years old in 2001.

What was the first event you competed in and in what year?

I competed at the Bonaire regatta in 2001 for the first time.

What are you personal sailing career highlights?

Winning my first freestyle grand slam at 15 years old in Fuerteventura in 2006, winning the Freestyle title in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 without losing a single heat for 4 years. Becoming double world champion this year by not only winning the freestyle title but also the slalom world title this only being my 2nd year on the slalom tour.

What are your future sailing goals?

I would like to progress into wave sailing as well. Most importantly though I would like to make my contribution to the growth of the windsurfing sport.

Who has had the greatest impact on your sailing and career and why?

My parents. They tirelessly brought my brother and I to the beach every weekend ( sometimes during the week!),brought us lunch, watched us and picked us up every time until we had our driver licenses. Until my 18th my parents would always travel with me to the events as I was underage. When you're that young it's hard to find your place between all of those other older sailors. Having had my parents there as my biggest supporters every time was/is very motivating.

Who is your sailing hero?

I look up to my Brother Quincy and the Bonairian freestylers, Taty, Tonky, Kiri and Bjorn who anytime they go sailing have the biggest smile on their face!

What other sports do you enjoy?

I've practiced many sports before starting windsurfing. However the ones I've sticked to are competitive swimming and tennis. Besides that I really go out and try anything. Kiting, skateboarding, tabletennis, biking around… anything really.

What does being nominated for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Awards mean to you and how would you feel if you were voted the winner?

Well, it is unreal to me that I have been nominated for this award and to be allowed to walk around at this ceremony with many other outstanding sailors is already an honour!
