The Same Question Every Day
Posted On:  17/11/2017 10:28:54

Day 4, the penultimate racing day of the 2017 South American Championships at the San Isidro Sailing Club in Buenos Aires.  The sun has returned, competitors are eager to get going, working their sails hard, and wondering what today will bring.

Peruvian coach, Juan Carlos Gonzalez, explained: "Each day it changes, today we have wind, the current, the sun; yesterday we had rain; we get a lot of wind, we get no wind - it depends on the day, the time, always different. It is not an easy place to sail, very hard.  The locals are always in the front, you have to try and catch up with them!"

It would appear that we already know who is likely to have a place on the podiums, but not necessarily the order - there are still some battles to be won. Patricia Freitas (BRA-2) and Maria Belen Bazo (PER-50) both have 17 points at the top of the RS:X youth and female fleet.  Mariano Reutemann (ARG-13) is clear in first RS:X place but 4 points  behind him are Francisco Saubidet Birkner (ARG-40) and Bautista Saubidet Birkner (ARG-3) just one point apart.

In the men's Techno 293 Plus, Nicolo Renna has the perfect score of 8 and is untouchable at the front of the fleet. However, in the Techno Plus Female fleet, Celina Saubidet Birkner (ARG-403) and Giorgia Speciale (ITA-1) have taken every bullet between them, just one point now separating 1st and 2nd place.

Giorgia, 2017 Techno293 Plus World Champion in Quiberon France, is in Buenos Aires preparing for her YOG goal. "Quiberon was the first step because we qualified the nation," she said. "Here is the second step because in Buenos Aires I can test the conditions of the venue and I think it is a big opportunity to see the place of the Youth Olympic Games," she added.
