IWA New Year Message
Hello all, It is my turn, in 2017, to assume the IWA’s Presidency and I will do that with great pleasure. The 2016 windsurfing year has been good and ended well. Despite the economic, political and social crises all around the world the windsurfing classes continue to work together successfully under the IWA umbrella. In addition, the future is ensured through the Techno 293, which continued its global progression, and the T293 Plus that finished very strongly in its first year and seems to want to follow the pathway of its little sister. The year 2017 will be important. World Sailing has a new President; the Windsurf Committee and the Youth Committee no longer exist, and we do not yet know the major sports trends or the political lines. We will have to be vigilant to maintain life in windsurfing and its Olympic status. It should not be forgotten that windsurfing is the most affordable means of access to sailing. I have been campaigning and working for windsurfing for a long time. I am now retired, and have given up several mandates in France so it will be easier for me to give more time than ever to IWA. Please do not hesitate to send your ideas, comments, proposals and ... criticisms, preferably constructive. Happy New Year all and I wish you a very good, and windy, 2017! Annual National Class Association Fees
Renewal invoices will be circulated by e-mail very soon so please make sure we have your up-to-date national association contact details. It is a requirement, as specified in each Notice of Race for IWA Sanctioned Events: "Competitors shall be members of a National Class Association which is a paid up member of the relevant international class association."
Membership gives:
* Each affiliated NCA one vote at the Class AGM, plus one vote (per class) at the IWA AGM
* Listing on the IWA website with a webpage * National Championship Events, open to foreign competitors, added to the relevant Class and IWA calendars * and more . . . The number of National Class Associations joining the IWA continues to rise. Thank you for your continued support of the IWA and its member classes, Help us to grow the sport by ensuring your national association joins the IWA.

The American Windsurfing Tour is excited to announce that after seven successful years of growth, we are changing our name to the International Windsurfing Tour! New year, new name, new international stops, and the same great windsurf family you love! The Formula Windsurfing World Championships 2017 will take place on Sylt (Germany). From May 30th to June 5th the World's best racers will travel to the island of Sylt to fight for the World title. Besides the prestigious title, the World Championships are offering a prize money of eur 10,000.00. The FW World Championships will be the sportive highlight of the Summer Opening which is the official kick-off event for the season on Sylt. Over 100,000 spectators are expected to visit the Summer Opening.......(more ) |

One of the mysteries of sailing is why windsurfing is so massive in Europe, and unpopular in Australia. Australia has a perfect climate year-round for windsurfing, as opposed to some countries where sailors break the ice off the lake before going for a sail! And compared to so many other forms of sailing windsurfing is attractive, it is cheap, the gear is easy to transport and store, and you don't need crew."......( more ) |

Kim Andersen has been elected as World Sailing President at World Sailing's General Assembly at the 2016 Annual Conference in Barcelona, Spain. The President and seven Vice-Presidents, two of which must be female, were voted for by World Sailing's full Member National Authorities, all of whom are entitled to be represented at the General Assembly."......( more ) |

Every summer junior sailing program requires an annual review, and while each program is unique, they all need to ask these two questions: - How is the attrition rate? - Are we providing skills for kids to become life sailors? Truth is, these two questions are connected. There will always be an attrition rate, so the goal is to minimize it. How? By providing a range of programming that reflects the diversity in sailing. ......( more ) |

The road to the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) will be a global adventure for the best young speedsters with a continental qualification system deciding which nations will send sailors to Argentina in October 2018. Exactly 100 sailors aged 15-18 will sail across five events on Mar del Plata from 1-12 October 2018 and an injection of pace has been added to the Buenos Aires 2018 YOG Sailing Competition with thrills and spills expected. With 10 bullets in the 15 race World Championship series, Ivan Pastor, the Spanish Olympian, took the 2016 Raceboard World title and the gold medal. On receiving his title he offered "Congratulations to the organisation for this amazing championship and thanks to all the competitors."......( more ) |

A light Mediterranean breeze, changes within the rankings and lots of emotions and drama on the final competition day. Great back to back final races for the men's gold and silver fleets and the women's final race, followed by the Medal races which included the top 10 competitors challenging each other, for the last time in the great show off, in front of the Limassol Nautical Sailing Club in Limassol, Cyprus......( more ) |

There is a new name on the plaque of champions - Alexandre Cousin from France is the 2016 Formula Windsurfing World Champion. To claim his first world title Alex won 3 of the 7 races completed and posted consistently high results in the others, finishing the championship with the lowest overall score before discarded races......( more ) |

From 22 to 30 October, some red hot windsurfing competition on the waters of Lake Garda, as the BIC Techno 293 OD and BIC Techno 293 Plus World Championships touched down in Torbole, Italy. A record edition with 474 competitors, for the first time from all 5 continents, turning these World Championships into the biggest ever One Design event in windsurf history.......( more ) |

The RS:One Class, in partnership with the Chinese Taipei Sailing Association and the Windsurfing Club Guan YIn Ting, has hosted the 2016 RS:One World Championships from 26th to 30th September in Penghu, Taiwan. RS:One is a multi generational, one-design, windsurfing board featuring an easy and light performing 7.8 rig. Espoirs (youth under 22 years old), Seniors (under 40 year old) and Masters (older than 40), men and women, can race together on the same starting line in a collective fleet.......( more ) |

The Raceboard and Division II European Championships have concluded in Brest, France with 90 competitors from 15 countries having entered the event. The biggest fleet was the Raceboard Men, but most importantly it was very good to see a strong Youth representation at the event. A sign that Raceboard can be attractive to sailors of all ages.......( more ) |

Sadly, it is finished . . . A dream come true! One would have wished it lasts again for ever but no, unfortunately, it had to come to an end after months of preparation. Brutal stop! What an Event . . . After 24 years of deep sleep and disappearance from the sailing world, this is with emotions we've seen our black II flag rising again officially ashore and on the mast of committee boat.......(more) |

Day 5: A long waiting day, which started with an early skippers meeting at 08:30 come to an end without enough wind to continue the races. With 64 Races done in 3 out of 5 days this Championship came to a smooth closure. Congratulations to the Event Organizers and to all the Cool Competitors........(more) |

After an exciting week full of races and battles on the water, a very successful Dunkerbeck GPS Speed Challenge has come to an end. After several years without an official World Championship, this year the Dunkeberck GPS Speed Challenge hosted the ISWC World Championship, with more than 50 competitors from 10 different countries fighting for the World Crown in both the Men's and Women's categories.......(more) |
